Captabria

Captabria is a protective fungicide based on captan, a multi-site phthalimide that has held its effectiveness for decades because a fungus would need to overcome several unrelated enzyme systems at once to resist it. It is the backbone of apple and pear scab programmes worldwide and the natural partner for the single-site chemistry that does the curative work. It also has useful activity against the storage rots that appear after harvest.

How it works
Captan reacts with thiol groups in fungal enzymes, disabling several enzyme systems simultaneously and preventing spore germination on the plant surface. It is purely protective — it must be on the leaf before the spore lands, and it only protects tissue it actually covers.
